Zamenhof to Couturat: 13. I. 1907. English translation by Don HARLOW
Kara Sinjoro! Dear Sir!
With sorrow I read your letter about the stubborn opposition which several of the most important Esperantists are offering you. But I am very thankful to you for your detailed letter, because it clarified to me several circumstances which I had not previously noted.
You know that I myself was an absolute friend of your undertaking, although I did not hope for the important result from it that you are hoping for. But after reading through and attentively considering your letter, I have come to the conviction that the opponents are not completely wrong. The principle of "audiatur et altera pars" is an excellent one.
Your arguments are very good, but the arguments of your opponents, too, contain much of importance. The single cause of your mutual disagreement consists only in the fact that both parties are too absolute. You see only the absolute good in your undertaking, and you fail to notice that with insufficient carefulness your undertaking can become dangerous for our idea; your opponents see only the danger, and they do not notice that with sufficient care your enterprise can only be useful to Esperanto. Because the goals of genuine Esperantism and the goal of the Delegation are completely identical, I am strongly convinced that both parties can very easily reach an excellent and perfect mutual agreement, if only they choose the correct manner of action. About this manner of action I now wish to speak.
As recently as a few weeks ago I was an absolute friend of your undertaking (although, of course, I couldn't publicly and too prematurely display this); it was not a letter from opponents (with whom I haven't corresponded about this at all) that caused me to become more careful, but YOUR OWN letter: this is why I hope that you will not view my opinion as partisan and that you will be willing to consider it carefully.
Ni rigardu efektive, kion donos la Komitato de la Delegacio: If the choice of an international language were made by some very important institution whose decision were law-giving for the large masses of people (for example the governments, or at least the "Association of Academies"), then all true Esperantists (not the chauvinists who want only "either Esperanto or nothing") could bravely join this institution with eyes open and help it with all their strength, because if we might fear that there was some kind of danger to Esperanto, we would at least know that there was no danger for the idea of a world language, which would be positively and forever solved by the decision of the named institution. But it's a very different matter when the "Delegation" will make the choice; then with insufficient care our idea can receive from this not promotion but a destructive, even fatal blow! Let's take a real look at what the Committee of the Delegation will give:
If it does not choose Esperanto, then there will develop a great scandal which will kill the whole idea, because it will discredit and destroy Esperanto, and the Committee will be too ridiculously week to give credit to any other system and to create for it after Esperanto's loud fall the kind of strength that Esperanto has acquired up to now. Consequently, by the Delegation's carelessness the entire idea and all the acquired fruits of 20 years of work will be buried forever!!
If we have even complete certainty that the Delegation must choose only Esperanto, then, too -- if the Delgation does not act carefully enough -- the problems raised by the choise will be much greater than its usefulness. However paradoxical this may seem to you, it is nevertheless true. Because a) we must have no illusions about the usefulness and we must understand that it will be almost zero, because anybody who hasn't been convinced by facts and strength will not be convinced even by ten Ostwalds, in whom the world has no interest at all; those who are indiferent will remain indifferent; the various Molenaars, Bonto-van-Bylevelts etc. will merely mock the Delegation's decision and will blare out to the world that the "Delegation" consisted of disguised Esperantists, who arranged a comedy to trick the world ... etc. b) But the problems -- if the Delgation is not careful enough -- will be great. A choice would have been very good 10-15 years ago, when there were still many people who wanted an international language, but did not know which they should take; but now the entire world has already for a long time gotten used to the idea that there is only one ready and tested artificial language; it either does not know of other projects, or knows only that they are weak theoretical projects by various malcontents who want to but cannot compete with Esperanto; if the Delegation now comes and says to the world: "we, competent men, tell you that there are various artificial languages, and that we have chosen Esperanto from among them", -- what sort of result will this lead to? Just the opposite of the one you wanted!! and the Esperantists will have to hide your action, with all their forces. Because your decision coming from a committee which has no authority and about which it will even be said that it consisted of disguised Esperantists will have no significance for the world, but your words about the "choice" will have a terribly fatal effect, they will put weapons into the hands of our enemies, they will destroy all of the things we have gained up to now, they will again cause doubt among and frighten off all those who were already prepared to work for it -- because the world will say: "now we have learned that there are many artificial languages of equal value, and in consequence we can accept none of them, because of one committe has today chosen one language, where is our guarantee that tomorrow another committee will not choose another!"
So consider well the kind of fatal result for our common idea your actions can have if you do not act carefully enough! If you want you arctions not to bring problems instead of usefulness, you must not say to the world that you are calling together a committee "to CHOOSE among the various artificial languages", but you must say "to DECIDE on the question of an international language".
Estu tre singardaj kun Viaj vortoj, ĉar alie Vi atingos ĝuste la malon de tio, kion Vi deziras atingi! Be very careful with your words, because otherwise you will get just the opposite of what you want to get!
And with the form of your decision you will have to be very careful [If the Delegation decides to choose some other language, not Esperanto, then I, as the author of Esperanto, naturally cannot mix into the matter, and I reserve for myself the right to accept your decision or not, depending on the authority of your committe; but in the case that you decide to choose Esperanto, then I would beg you to be very careful with the form of your decision]. If you say "we have chosen Esperanto", -- then (for the above stated reason) you have caused terrible harm to everything. Your decision can be useful only in the case that you express it approximately in the following manner (I am, of course, not giving a definitive text, only an example):
"Ni, senpartiaj delegitoj ... esploris ... kaj venis al la sekvanta konkludo: "We, non-partisan delegates ... have studied ... and come to the following conclusion:
"Ĉar la esploroj montris, ke devas esti elektita nepre nur lingvo arta; "Because studies have shown that only an artificial language must be chosen;
"Ĉar en la nuna tempo ekzistas nur unu lingvo arta tute preta, perfekte vivipova, plene elprovita kaj multe uzata, kaj ĉio alia estas nur projektoj; "Because at the present there is only one artificial language that is completely read, perfectly capable of life, fully tested and widely used, and all else are only projects;
"Ĉar tiu ĉi lingvo apartenas al neniu aparta persono nek societo; "Because this language belongs to no special individual or organization;
"Ĉar por la mondo estas grava la ekzistado de taŭga internacia lingvo, sed ne diskutado pri tiuj aŭ aliaj sensignifaj detaloj, kiuj prezentas nur aferon de gusto kaj neniam finiĝus; "Because it is the existence of a suitable international language that is important for the world, not discussion of this or that insignificant detail, which is only a matter of taste and would never end;
"So we have come to the conclusion that every friend of the idea of an international language must join with Esperanto and work for its dissemination, and that everyone who battles against Esperanto must be viewed as an enemy of the idea of an international language.
"Several improvements which, in our experience, it would be useful to make in Esperanto must be made not by individuals but by the Esperantist Central Language Committee, which for the good of the matter consults on everything with Esperanto's author, but which is completely independent of that author, and elects its own members every three years.
"We are sending this conclusions of ours to the ministers of public education in all countries, to all scientific societies and to the media, with the request that..."
If the Delegation actis in this kind of way, it will bear a great service to our common idea, or (in the worst case) at least no great harm. I am convinced that if you act in this way, the eminent Esperantists will happily join you.
I know, of course, that you cannot dictate this or that type of action to the Delegation; but you can at least warn them that because we can't foresee what sort of authority the Delegation committee will have, they should be careful not to use the word "choice" but the innocuous word "decision" or "study", or something similar. Every Esperantist can bravely ally himself with a committee that "studies" with no fear that by doing this he is a priori discrediting Esperanto, as would happen with the word "elekti".
I hope, dear comrade, that you will not be angry with me because I have so openly explained to you my current opinion of the matter. You will understand that I am doing this not because of any author's pride. I am making my proposal to you only because I am convinced that it is the only harmless route that will take us to our common goal. If I knew that the Delegation Committee was sufficiently authoritative, to force the world to accept its decision, then I would personally blindly accept everything that the Delegation did; but because I fear very strongly that this authority will not be very great, then for the good of our common idea we must be very careful if some unconsidered step by the Delegation is not to destroy 20 years of work by the Esperantists.
