Zamenhof to Cart: 24.II.07. English translation by Don HARLOW
Kara sinjoro!
|
Dear sir!
|
Pardonu, ke mi ne tuj respondis vian gravan leteron de 14/II, ĉar mi estas
ĉiam terure okupita.
|
Excuse me for not immediately answering your important letter of Feb. 14,
because I have always been terribly occupied.
|
Mi dankas vin kore por la alsendita cirkulero pri la projekto de s-ro
Corret. Ni esperu, ke la entreprenita afero alportos al Esperanto multe da
bono.
|
I heartily thank you for the circular that you sent about M. Corret's
project. Let's hope that the undertaken affair will bring much good to
Esperanto.
|
Pri Javal mi jam sendis siatempe nekrologan artikolon al la "Revuo"; por
"Lingvo Internacia" mi povus nur ripeti tion saman, kio kompreneble ne
estus interesa por la legantoj.
|
Regarding Javal, I have already sent an obituary article to the "Revuo";
for "Lingvo Internacia" I could only repeat the same thing, which of course
would not be interesting to the readers.
|
Nun pri la korektoj en la Universala Vortaro. La plimulton de la faritaj
korektoj mi plene akceptas; nur pri kelkaj mi volas fari la sekvantajn
rimarkojn:
|
Now about the corrections in the Universala Vortaro. I fully accept the
majority of the corrections that have been made; I only want to make the
following remarks about some:
|
1) mi ne komprenas bone, kial vi proponas (por "infekti") la tradukon
"contaminer" anstataŭ "infecter". Ĉu oni povas iun "contaminer" per sia
malsano, per sia gaja humoro k.t.p.? Ŝajnas al mi, ke "contaminer" havas
iom alian signifon. Ĉu mi eraras?
|
1) I don't understand well why you propose (for "infekti") the translation
"contaminer" instead of "infecter". Can we "contaminer" someone with our
illness, our merry attitude etc.? It seems to me that "contaminer" has a
somewhat different meaning. Am I wrong?
|
2) Apud kelkaj vortoj (pumpi, elspezi, grio, komunii, marko, ŝuldi) mi
trovis la frazon "bona traduko en ĉiuj lingvoj", kiun mi tute ne komprenas.
Kion vi volis diri per tio ĉi? Se la traduko estas bona, tiam kial vi
parolas pri ĝi?
|
2) Alongside several words (pumpi, elspezi, grio, komunii, marko, ŝuldi) I
found the sentence "a good translation in all languages", which I don't
understand at all. What did you mean by it? If the translation is good,
then why talk about it?
|
3) "Stamp" povas esti egale bone tradukita per verbo (stampi) kaj per
substantivo (stampo); se vi trovas, ke estas necese doni por tiu ĉi radiko
en lingvoj tradukon egalan, tiam mi preferus doni por ĉiuj lingvoj la
tradukon per verbo (kiel la tradukoj germana, rusa kaj pola). La ago
estas: stampi; la rezultato: stampo; la instrumento: stampilo.
|
3) "Stamp" can be translated equally well with a verb (stampi) and with a
noun (stampo); if you find that it is necessary to give an equal
translation for this root in languages, then I would prefer to give the
translation for all languages with a verb (like the German, Russian and
Polish translations). The act is: stampi; the result: stampo; the
instrument: stampilo.
|
4) "Stuckaturen" ne estas multenombro, sed verbo. (1) Ankaŭ por tiu ĉi vorto
(kiel por "stamp") mi intencis doni al la radiko signifon verban.
|
4) "Stuckaturen" is not a plural, but a verb. For this word, too (as for
"stamp"), I intended to give the root a verbal meaning.
|
|
5) For "akuŝi" I advise conserving its intransitive meaning (which it has
in the Un V). The uncertainty about this word was caused by the following
circumstance: five or six years ago M. de Beaufront wrote me that, because
of the word "akuŝistino", it was necessary to give a transitive meaning to
"akuŝi". Because M. B.'s reasoning of that time seemed correct to me and
because the Univ. Vortaro did not yet have a character of untouchability,
for this reason, confused by M. B.'s arguments I agreed that he should give
a transitive meaning to "akuŝi" in his dictionary. The word later crossed
over into all other dictionaries with this kind of meaning and caused
confusion, and I also put it into the German-Esperanto dictionary. Now,
because the Univ. Vortaro must remain untouchable, I advise conserving for
the word its previous meaning, the more so because this meaning also more
correct, logical and convenient. The existence of the word "akuŝistino"
must not confuse us at all, because everybody will easily understand that
"akuŝistino" does not mean "a woman who professionally (!) gives birth",
but "a woman who professionally occupies herself with matters of giving
birth" (does not occupy herself with giving birth but only with
parturitions).
|
6) "Domaĝo" ne havas la sencon de "malprofito". La efektiva signifo de la
esperanta "domaĝi" estas proksimume: ne voli elspezi, ne voli perdi, ne
voli difekti. Ekzemple: "li ne aĉetis la libron, ĉar li domaĝis la monon;
li ne eliris en la pluva vetero, ĉar li domaĝis sian veston; li forkuris de
la batalo, ĉar li domaĝis sian vivon". Iafoje la senco de "domaĝo" estas
tre proksima al la senco de "bedaŭro" (ekzemple: "kia domaĝo!" = kiel
bedaŭrinde! = kia perdo (aŭ difekto) kiun mi ne volis havi!).
|
6) "Domaĝo" does not have the meaning of "malprofito". The real meaning of
the Esperanto "domaĝi" is approximately: to not want to spend, to not want
to lose, to not want to damage. For example: "li ne aĉetis la libron, ĉar
li domaĝis la monon; li ne eliris en la pluva vetero, ĉar li domaĝis sian
veston; li forkuris de la batalo, ĉar li domaĝis sian vivon". Sometimes the
meaning of "domaĝo" is very near to the meaning of "bedaŭro" (for example:
"kia domaĝo!" = how regrettable! = what a loss (or damage) that I didn't
want to have!).
|
7) "Ekstr" povas esti ne sole adverba, sed ankaŭ adjektiva.
|
7) "Ekstr" can be not only adverbial, but also adjectival.
|
8) "Gargari" = lavi per skuado de la fluidaĵo; sekve oni povas gargari ne
sole la gorĝon, sed ankaŭ glason k.t.p.
|
8) "Gargari" = to wash by shaking the fluid; consequently you can
"gargari" not only your throat, but also a glass etc.
|
9) "Lui" signifas nur preni lue; (doni lue = luigi).
|
9) "Lui" means only to take as a rental; (to give as a rental = luigi).
|
Por publikigi la liston de la korektitaj vortoj kune kun ĉiuj miaj
rimarkigoj en la "Lingvo Internacia" mi donas miaflanke mian plenan
permeson; sed mi konsilus al vi peti ankaŭ la permeson de s-ro Boirac.
|
I give my full permission to publish the list of corrected words together
with all my remarks in the "Lingvo Internacia"; but I would advise you to
ask for M. Boirac's permission, as well.
