Attractive Bait: Immediate Comprehensibility (Louis de Beaufront, L'Espérantiste, February 1907). English translation by Don HARLOW
Nomo,
adjektivo, verbo ne havos plu proprajn fizionomiojn kaj povos esti
konfuzitaj unuj kun la aliaj. Fine la vortoj, ne estante plu ligitaj inter
si per devenigado severe metoda, devos esti lernataj ĉiu speciale.

... To attain immediate comprehensibility for the learned, we must of
necessity use the most international form of the chosen element and
consequently accept the multitude of meanings which it contains in our
languages, in which they do not correspond to each other. Further, we must
abandon the multiplying prefixes and suffixes of the words, by which
Esperanto gives us a vocabulary so easy to acquire. We must even fall into
an error that is, in practice, even more important and go so far that the
words no longer have endings that clearly characterize their type, role,
mood and time, as in the Esperanto vocabulary. Name, adjective, verb will
no longer have their own physiognomies and can be confused with each other.
Finally the words, no longer being linked among themselves by strictly
methodical derivation (1), will each have to be specially learned.

Se frazo skribita laŭ tia sistemo povas esti pli tuj komprenata de
klerulo, ol la frazo responda en Esperanto, la kaŭzo ne venas el tio, ke la
sistemo estas pli bona, sed nur el la fakto, ke tiu klerulo antaŭe scias
ĉiujn vortojn en ĝi trovatajn...
|
If a sentence written according to such a system can be more immediately
understood by an educated person than the corresponding sentence in
Esperanto, the cause is not that the system is better but only that this
educated person previously knew all the words found in it...

Sed ĉu do ekzistas nur kleruloj en la mondo, aŭ popoloj pli malpli
novlatinaj? ... Ĉu la lingvo internacia estas farita unue por la kleruloj,
aŭ por la homoj meze kaj eĉ elemente instruitaj? Ĉu ni volas fari el ĝi la
propran bonon de malgranda eminentularo spirita, aŭ la bonon de ĉiuj homoj
implikitaj en la internaciaj rilatoj? La tuta demando estas en tio ĉi...
|
But are there, then, only educated persons in the world, or peoples more
or less Romance-speaking? ... Has the international language been made
primarily for the well-educated, or for people who have only an average, or
even elementary, education? Do we want to make of it the good of a small
spiritual group of eminent individuals, or the good of all people involved
in international relations? The entire question is in this...

... And in the end, is to read a text in a language at first sight the
knowledge, the command of that language? Is it not also necessary to write
it? To speak it? I am waiting for the manufacturers of "prim vist", of
"prima vizion" etc. to perform this double experiment. Yes, I want to see
their disciples struggling before their excellent, too excellent
dictionaries, because they oppress memory, struggling before the multitude
of meanings, before that multitude of imprecise and multiple endings for a
few grammatical categories of words, struggling before vaguenesses that the
word order of the sentence does not always make clear, because of too
great a grammatical poverty, struggling before yet other things... Let's
await them at public courses, and there we shall see whether understanding
a language at first sight and KNOWING IT are the same thing.

|
In reality they are unconsciously offered a bait to themselves and the
others... No, certainly, the Esperantist does not understand his entire
text "a prim vist", "a prima vizion" etc.; he will need one or two hours of
learning por acquire the grammatical elements that will give him the key to
that text and others. But when that has been done he will learn the
language as though in a game and will not need to load his memory with a
double useless burden. He will easily recover the words to write or speak.
On the contrary, the "primvistists"... will struggle in constant
disequilibrium to write or speak; they will more rapidly understand (a
few), but they will need endless time to learn...
