Commentary by Waringhien. Translation by Don HARLOW

Well, if we compare the first document with the text of the same prayer in
our Esperanto and in the reform Esperanto of 1894, especially if, in that
latter text, we conserve the primitive nu and nue (later corrected to
nos and nose), it is not possible to avoid Cart's conclusion that
Adjuvanto was not a finished language, but merely a project of reform of
Esperanto, midway between the language of 1887 (ours) and that of 1894. To
Cart's detailed demonstration (Lingvo Internacia, May 1908), I can add a
deciding fact: the only characteristic by which the above texts are
distinguished from the system of Esperanto is the double preposition of
location for state (in) and for movement to (en); well, in a letter of
January, 1902, to Bourlet, Beaufront was already talking about that double
preposition, but quited it in the forms: "en: state, ejs: movement to"!]
|
personaj kaj montraj pronomoj.
|
In reality, if we consider the above quoted letter, Beaufront did not
think even of removing the supersigned letters, and the points that
occupied his fantasy were the plural in -i and the addition of gender to
the personal and demonstrative pronouns. His contribution to the project
Ido was really limited to this last point (and to the unhappy imperative
ending -ez).
|
Sed, kiaj ajn estis tiuteme liaj fantazioj, oni devas konfesi, ke ĝis 1907
Couturat.
|
But whatever his fantasies were on that subject, it must be confessed
that up to 1907 he had always loyally suppressed them, because the
experience of 1894 (when he voted against the reforms) had taught him
about the very great danger, the near impossibility of reforms initiated by
private individuals to be voted on by the mass. Couturat's proposal, which
had to do with intervention by an external and authoritative committee of
prestigious persons, seemed to him a quite different matter and to present
many chances of success. So he finally joined Couturat's plot.
|
|
But -- and here we have to take into account the secretive character of
this man -- instead of openly stepping forth with their common project, he
believed that it would be more diplomatic to present the project
anonymously; in this way personal attacks, jealousies and accusations would
be avoided -- the committee and the public would have to decide only about
texts that in themselves spoke to rationality, not to passions. Couturat
agreed with this tactic -- and this was the first tragic error that they
both made. They did not foresee that, to protect the anonymity of the
planners, they would be forced into constant mental reservations and even
to lies, and that, if this was to be merely troublesome and somewhat
ignoble for a free person such as Couturat, for Beaufront, the chief editor
of L'Esperantiste and President of the SFPE, it would fatally give the
figure of the classic traitor.
|
|
The other error was less visible, but even heavier. Couturat's project
contained four parts: reform of the alphabet, discarding of thought-up
words ("volapükisms", as Javal called them), simplification of the grammar
and systematization of the derivation. On the first point, the studies of
Javal and others delivered good indications to him; on the second Zamenhof
himself had guided him, with his 1894 project; and from the same source he
and Beaufront coincidentally drew the main details of the third (plural in
-i, adjective invariance, optional accusative), but he believed himself
cleverer than Zamenhof in the choice of the new ending of the infitive,
while by tripling the infinitives (-ar, -ir, -or) with the consequently
necessary change of accent location he really made the grammar more
complicated (not even mentioning that colossal phonetic error, of which
von Wahl was also guilty, by which he choose, as an important grammatical
sign, the final consonant R, which in that position has already disappeared
in practice from the entire linguistic terrain of English -- where it is
replaced by a sort of "mute e" --, of Northern Germany -- where an "a" is
heard instead -- and of Northern France -- where it is muted out to a sort
of very weak "kh"!)
|
|
But most especially the last part was based on a terrible misunderstanding
of the spirit of Esperanto in particular and of the national languages in
general. With respect to Esperanto, it is now somewhat amusing to reread
the first lines of the brochure that he wrote in the months May-June to be
presented to the members of the Delegation Committee:
