Gramatiko

SI: A word pointing back to the subject of the action to which it relates. Li kombas lin = He combs him (somebody else); Li kombas sin = He combs himself (not somebody else).
SIA: Like si, points back to the subject of the action. Li vizitas lian fratinon = He visits his (somebody else's) sister; Li vizitas sian fratinon = He visits his (own) sister.

Egalon montras

TIEL... KIEL...: As... as... Shows equality. La lilio estas tiel delikata kiel la rozo = The lily is as delicate as the rose.

Prepozicioj

POR: for, for the purpose of, in order to. Anticipatory. Don't confuse with pro, which comes a couple of lessons later, or with other uses of "for" such as dum (see below). Por kio vi venis? = For what did you come? Ŝi estos bona fratino por vi = She will be a good sister for you.
DUM: during. Li restis tiel dum longa momento = He remained thus for (during) a long moment.
ĈIRKAŬ: around. La rozoj staras ĉirkaŭ la Popola Domo = The roses stand around the People's House.

Demanda vorto

KIEL?: (Question) How? In what way? (Linking) As, like. Kiel la kolonelo klinas sin? = How does the Colonel lean over? La lilio ne estas ruĝa, kiel la rozo = The lily is not red like the rose.

Prefiksoj

EK-: Shows that an action is starting or instantaneous. Li ridas = He is laughing. Li ekridas = He breaks out laughing.
FOR-: Shows distance, "away"-ness. Li iras = He is going. Li foriras = He is going away. Li forestas = He is absent.

Sufiksoj

-AĴ-: An "instantiation" (something solid) described by the root. manĝi = to eat, manĝaĵo = food (something to eat).
-IG-: To cause (whatever is in the root) to be or happen. granda = large, malgrandigi = to make small.
