This is Pierce Brosnan's third outing in the role. This time we find him assigned to protect Elektra King (Sophie Marceau), young oil heiress (her father died of a surfeit of money) building a pipeline from her hereditary, and somewhat overpolluted, oil field at Baku through southern Turkey to the Mediterranean -- eventually, a lifeline for the West. Obviously, the evil Rusians, with their three pipelines to the Black Sea and the sea route through the Bosporus at Istanbul, are out to get her, using the evil Renard, a real nasty who can feel no pain because of a bullet in his medulla oblongata; he is Elektra's own personal bugaboo because he once held her for ransom and brutalized her. But things are not always as obvious as they seem... |

For those who like action, there are some great scenes. We can start with a high-speed boat race through London, a race that ends up in a hot-air balloon. Later, we get to see a fission bomb disarmed (a staple of many Bond films), this time while racing down the bore of an oil pipeline. Bond at one point gets to demolish four enemy snowmobiles suspended from parasails. Baku's dock district is totally destroyed by a pair of tree-trimming helicopters, with a bit of help from Bond's BMW and its rocket launchers. And there's a nice fight over a rod of plutonium in a Russian submarine stuck nose-down in the bottom of the Golden Horn. Not to mention more explosions than you're likely to see in World War III. |

I have a few personal kvetches. A bunch of demonstrating villagers outside Baku are calmed by their Orthodox priest; Azeris are, almost to a man (and woman), followers of Islam. No doctor worth her salt would have pronounced Bond, with a thoroughly dislocated shoulder, fit for duty, no matter how much strength and stamina he demonstrated to her in private. I can't believe that any IVA nuclear physicist could be quite so vacuous as Dr. Christmas Jones (played by the vacuous Denise Richards). Somehow I find it difficult to believe that a slab of plutonium can be turned into a rod of the same substance quite as quickly and easily as the film suggests. And I prefer to hope that the situation of Bond's likeable sometimes foe, sometimes something else, Valentin Zukovsky (the elephantine Robby Coltrane) at the end of the film is a bit more ambiguous than it appears. |

Oh, and keep an eye out for MI-6's collection of letters of the alphabet. M (Judy Dench) gets a much more important part in this film than she has had before. If you watch closely, you'll catch Q's (Desmond Llewellyn) retirement from the series. And you may enjoy his bumbling successor R's (John Cleese) saving Bond from a compromising situation at the end, though similar scenes have not been unusual in previous endings (see e.g. "Moonraker"). Moneypenny (Samantha Bond), except for James the only unlettered member of MI-6, as usual exists only to engage in verbal duelling against James with twin-bladed double entendres. |
