Unlike many authors, Bujold only gets better as she gets more experienced. Her most recent cycle of books, in which she has been weaning her greatest creation, Miles Naismith (/) Vorkosigan, away from being a galactic adventurer and into being a dignified Vor-class gentleman, clearly shows this. And of the four books in this cycle, A Civil Campaign is the best of the lot.

A Civil Campaign takes up where its predecessor, Komarr, left off. Miles has fallen in love with the widowed Madame Ekaterin Vorsoisson, and has mapped out a campaign, in best Dendarii Mercenary form, to win her heart and hand, starting with hiring her to design and develop a Barrayaran garden for Vorkosigan House -- a plan anticipated by a throwaway paragraph in chapter 2 of Komarr. Unfortunately, Madame Vorsoisson, who is herself (though she may not totally realize it) in love with Miles, has her own plans, and they don't include a second attempt at marriage, a state she previously found quite wearing.

Meanwhile, Miles's clone-brother Mark and his (perhaps too) beloved Kareen Koudelka have returned from their first year on Beta Colony. Kareen immediately falls into the restrictive society of her somewhat conservative family, while Mark is busy creating his first enterprise, which involves an absent-minded Escobaran scientist and eight thousand ghastly-looking bugs that vomit edibles. Mark is soon distracted from his new business by Kareen's societally imposed chastity.

And finally, cousin Ivan Vorpatril sets out to woo and win an old flame, Lady Donna Vorrutyer, only to find that Lady Donna has gone to Beta Colony and taken steps to put her into the running for the Countship of her district and out of the running for uxorial bliss.

Bujold adds to the mix two, count them, political struggles for district Countships -- Miles becomes embroiled in both of them -- a modicum of political backstabbing that, again, harks back to the events in Komarr, a fair amount of Cordelia Vorkosigan (Count Aral generally stays quietly in the background, only coming forward once or twice to lecture Miles), and Miles's catastrophic dinner party (chapter 9), which by itself would be worth the price of admission if you couldn't find it on the Web.

Bujold also attempts to tell the story in a way slightly different from her usual approach. Historically, she has generally used a single third-person viewpoint (either Cordelia -- in Shards of Honor and Barrayar -- or Miles), but in Mirror Dance she experimented a bit with a story seen from two viewpoints, those of Miles and Mark, and fined this up a bit in Komarr, where Miles and Ekaterin are given alternate chapters. In the current book, she provides no fewer than five viewpoint characters -- Miles, Ekaterin, Mark, Kareen and Ivan -- changing viewpoints one or more times within the same chapter (with the sole exception of the above-mentioned chapter 9, which belongs strictly to Miles, though I'm sure he would have been glad to give it up), and in fact giving all five viewpoint characters parts of the final chapter and epilog. And, strangely, she makes this work.

High points of the book? I've mentioned chapter 9. I could also mention the interventions of important extra-viewpoint characters -- Emperor Gregor for Ekaterin with her son Nikki and, later, Ekaterin's brother and cousin-in-law, Cordelia for Mark and Kareen with the Koudelkas. The climax in the Council of Counts is worth rereading, several times. As is Miles's letter of apology to Ekaterin (chapter 11). The reader might also note that, for the first time in many volumes, we actually meet some likeable Vorrutyers. And Ivan is given a chance to be a hero -- and takes it.

Again, A Civil Campaign is the best of Bujold's works so far. If you choose to wait for the paperback edition -- you're missing out.
