In the western world, we have our Aesop and de la Fontaine. Apparently, fabulists have abounded in China over the past millenia, and in this book Gao has compiled a hundred samples of their works (in fact, 103).
As in the West, the fables generally show a moral, but not always a consistent moral. For example, two of them show the ingratitude of saved animals ("A Monk Saves a Tiger" by Liu Ji, "Mr. Dongguo and the Wolf" by Ma Zhongxi (1)); in China, it seems, the lion would eat Androcles. But another shows the gratitude of saved animals ("Cranes Gave Pearls" by Gan Bao (2)).
Some authors have placed their fables in the mouth of a specific individual Yan Zi has Yan Ying (in fact, himself); Su Dongpo has his Aizi; Lu Rong has the not-too-bright Aliu. This follows the precedent of Nasruddin Afanti ("Tales of Afanti," from the same publisher).
Nur unu fablon mi povis pli-malpli identigi, laŭ moralo, kun konata okcidenta fablo; temas pri la anonima "Tamburado de Reĝo You", kiu donas la saman instruon kiel "La knabo kiu priavertis lupon". I can only identify one fable, more or less, by its moral with a well-known Western fable; this is the anonymous "King You's Drumming," which gives the same instruction as "The Boy Who Cried Wolf."
Interesa antaŭparolo de PANG Naiying prezentas al ni la ĉinan fablologion An interesting introduction by Pang Naiying introduces us to the Chinese study of fables.
Generally, there are no language errors; but on page 116, in the footnote, note that the years 1368-1644 cover the Ming, not the Qing, Dynasty.

Piednoto / Footnote

(1) Verŝajne, kelkaj esperantistoj rekonos tiun fablon, ĉar antaŭ multaj jaroj ĝi aperis, iom pliampleksigita, kiel unu el tiuj ĉinaj komiksoj por geknaboj en Esperanto. Some Esperanto speakers will probably recognize this fable, because a number of years ago it appeared, in a somewhat expanded form, as one of those Chinese comic books for children in Esperanto.
Somewhat reminiscent of the well-known Japanese story of the crane-wife, which I have found in at least three different versions in Esperanto books from Japan.
