Dum vi estis kun ni / While You Were With Us

   Zoltan estas juna, laborema kaj ambicia hungara prokuroro, kiu, ricevinte du anonimajn leterojn el la urbo Somkut rilate al la lastatempa morto de iu K.    Zoltan is a young, hard-working and ambitious Hungarian prosecutor, who, upon receiving two anonymous letters from the town of Somkut relating to the recent death of one K. Balazs, decides to investigate the matter during his upcoming vaction -- an easy thing to do, because he himself came from Somkut, and his mother still lives there. Of course, he has little faith in anonymous denunciations; but it becomes obvious in this case that the daughter has played some kind of rôle in her mother's death. But then an important question arises for the prosecutor: If you have helped someone who is going to die of cancer and who is suffering terrible pains to die, at her request, are you guilty of murder? Or in such circumstances in euthenasia, "the good death," justifiable? Zoltan believes that murder remains murder, whatever the circumstances; but there are also arguments from the other side, even from a Catholic priest.

   During his six-day investigation, Zoltan has to face a second, more personal problem as well: where should he make his career? An ambitious person aims for the action in Budapest; but there are many problems in Somkut that call for treatment by a capable prosecutor.

   Ekzistas unu-du gravaj teknikaj problemoj pri la libro. Ĉefa inter ili estas la subita, ne antaŭe preparita, historio pri la mortinta Andreĉjo, la juna frato de Zoltan; tio estis iasenca maŝindio, kiu aperis lastmomente por konfuzi Zoltanon.    There are one or two improtant technical problems with the book. The main one is the sudden, not previously prepared, story of the death of Andrew, Zoltan's young brother; this is a sort of deus ex machina, which appeared at the last moment to confuse Zoltan. It would have been better if the author had earlier given some kind of indication about the one-time existence of the poor lad. The mother's often shown and alluded-to semiprofessional painting does not play an important part in the story, although it seems to take up several pages.

   On the other hand, the book is generally well thought out and has a good style, as we usually expect from nemere. The subject is current and quite important. The language flows, and it is really difficult to put the book down to go to sleep
