The Australian Trevor Steele, who is best known as the author of the novel But Only a Fragment, apparently supports himself by teaching foreign languages -- English, German, Esperanto (including one summer at the San Francisco State University Esperanto Workshop). At the beginning of the nineties, he traveled to the Soviet Union of that time to see the country and teach mainly English in various places. The result is the larger part of this memoir, in which he humorously (and not too complimentarily) describes his experiences in that part of the world at the end of the Soviet era. The final chapters also describe the state, in 1991, of the German east (the erstwhile GDR), Poland and Austria, with some discussion of the evils of Czech customs agents. |
Li havas penetreman okulon, fortan humursenton, kaj interesan verkstilon. Liaj priskriboj ofte ŝajnas forte satiraj: |
Steele is one of those authors that you can put down while reading only with difficulty, even for such necessities as sleeping, working and eating. He has a penetrating eye, a strong sense of humor, and an interesting writing style. His descriptions often seem strongly satirical |

In four additional short chapters Steele gives episodes from other parts of his life, including a visit to the Esperanto-speaking training center / community "Bona Espero" in Brazil. |
The style, as I have already suggested, is excellent. But he occasionally falls into the trap of simply borrowing a word from English instead of looking up the correct Esperanto word (atrakcio instead of allogaĵo, bagaĝo instead of valizaro, etc.). The editor, and the publisher, who apparently did not pass the manuscript to somebody who would check the language, are at least equally guilty for this. In the final chapter ("At Last Some Authentic Writing Material") he sort of offers a new prefix from a word that is (at least in some circles) currently in common use. |
Mi forte rekomendas la libron. |
I strongly recommend the book. |
