Jam de la komenco de la ĵus finiĝinta duonjarcento, Rosbach estas konata kiel kapabla verkisto de noveloj en Esperanto (kaj eĉ de unu romano). Espereble, la nuna libro ne estas lia lasta, ĉar ĝi estus maltaŭga monumento por fini estimindan karieron.

From the beginning of the half-century that has just ended, Rosbach has been known as a capable author of short stories in Esperanto (and even of one novel). Hopefully, this book is not his last; it would be an unsuitable monument to end a respectable career.

Temas pri 18 noveloj, vinjetoj, kaj simplaj anekdotoj, pliparte 2-3-paĝaj, el kiuj ĉiu diskutas ion en la vivo de unu persono kaj titole portas nomon, kiun oni atribuas al tiu persono. Kelkaj estas interesaj -- jam la unua ("Lionardo") merite kaptas la atenton, kaj konvene finiĝas per bela ŝerco; la leganton simile trafas kelkaj aliaj mallongaĵoj, kiuj ŝajnas havi ian celon "Gwynplaine", "Animalo", "Kobold, "Mowambo" kaj (ĝis iu grado) "Profesoro Kalsono", ekzemple. Aliajn difektas diversaj problemoj; ekzemple, la fino de "Cecilia" (la kvara) lasis min tute nekontentigita. Du relative longaj pecoj, "Callipygue" kaj "Anemone", estas fakte partoj de unusola rakonto, disrompebla nur pro tio, ke ĉefrolas du malsamaj personoj (patro respektive filino).

These are 18 short stories, vignettes, and simple anecdotes, for the most part two or three pages long, each one of which discusses something in the life of one person and is titled with the name attributed to that person. Some are interesting -- right at the start, the first ("Lionardo") deservedly captures the reader's attention, and ends suitably with a nice joke; the reader will similarly encounter several other short items that seem to have a purpose "Gwynplaine", "Animalo", "Kobold", "Mowambo" and (to some degree) "Profesoro Kalsono", for example. Others are damaged by various problems; for example, the end of "Cecilia" (the fourth) left me completely unsatisfied. Two relatively long pieces, "Callipygue" and "Anemone", are in fact parts of a single story, broken up only because the main characters are two different persons (father and daughter, respectively).

Eble eĉ pli grava problemo devenis de la redaktanto, eventuale de la eldonisto. Du el la rakontoj estas evidente nekompletaj. "Bobo", la dua novelo, finiĝas meze de konversado. "Kamma", preskaŭ la fina novelo, eĉ finiĝas meze de frazo. Mi unue supozis, ke malaperas kvarpaĝaĵo dum la vinktado, sed laŭ la paĝnumeroj, tiu evidente ne estas la problemo. Oni povus esperi, ke FEL iam proponos novan, ĝustigitan eldonon; sed mi dubas, ĉu la enhavo ĉiuokaze meritas tion.

An even more important problem may have originated with the editor, or perhaps with the publisher. Two of the stories are obviously incomplete. "Bobo", the second short story, ends in the middle of a conversation. "Kamma", almost the last story, even ends in the middle of a sentence. At first, I thought that a leaf had disappeared during stapling, but from the page number that is obviously not the problem. It might be hoped that FEL will someday offer a new, corrected edition; but I doubt whether the content really deserves that.

Mi aldonu, ke lingve la libro estas tute kontentiga; Rosbach estas tute kompetenta pri Esperanto. La kvar paĝoj de piednotoj fine de la libro iom ĝenas -- temas cetere pri kulturaj, ne lingvaj, aferoj. La novelo "Anemone" sola generis 24 notojn, el kiuj la plimultaj estis sennecesaj.

Let me add that the book is linguistically quite satisfying; Rosbach is very competent in Esperanto. The four pages of footnotes at the end of the book are somewhat bothersome -- these have to do with cultural, not linguistic, matters. The short story "Anemone" by itself generated 24 footnotes, of which the majority were unnecessary.
