The book is very much like a somewhat long review article that might best
have appeared in the Annual Review of Interlinguistics (if there were such
a book). (1) It's
basically a well-documented quickie review of the
language Esperanto and the Esperanto movement. Every page is chock full of
references to the contents of a fourteen-page bibliography, most of it of
relatively recent vintage. Even Harlow gets a mention. (2)

Other planned languages get barely more than a passing mention, in the
introduction; the three that are mentioned by name -- in the context of
giving examples of a priori, a posteriori and mixed languages -- are
Solresol, Interlingua (attributed to one Giovanni Semprini -- is this yet a
third IAL of the name???), and Volapük. In addition, Ido is mentioned, in
slightly more detail, in three later chapters.

Later chapters cover: a biography of Zamenhof; the linguistic structure of
Esperanto; "Esperanto Pedagogy and Linguistic Scholarship"; literature; and
movement and culture. A long final chapter, probably intended to be the
most attractive, is called "Esperanto artifacts" and contains numerous
larger-than-life black-and-white photos of Esperanto postage stamps,
stickers, pins and patches. Why not T-shirts??? Several appendices cover
the famous or notorious sixteen rules, world Esperanto congresses, useful
addresses, references to works on specific topics, and a very useful
glossary of terms used, both Esperanto and English (I learned a nifty new
one: orthoepy!). |

Longa fina ĉapitro, supozeble intencita por esti plej alloga, havas la nomon "Esperantaj aĵoj" kaj enhavas multenombrojn sufiĉe grandajn nigrablankajn fotaĵojn de Esperantaj poŝtmarkoj, glumarkoj, pingloj kaj alkudraĵoj. Kial ne T-ĉemizoj??? Kelkaj apendicoj traktas la famajn, aŭ misfamajn, dekses regulojn, Universalajn Kongresoj, utilajn adresojn referencojn al verkaĵoj pri specifaj temoj, kaj tre utilan glosaron de terminoj uzitaj, en kaj Esperanto kaj la angla (mi lernis belan novan terminon: ortoepio!).

For those interested in Esperanto and its associated movement, worth having
largely for the research that went into it and for the bibliography. As far
as content is concerned, Janton's Esperanto: Language, Literature,
Community, though in some ways now out of date, is probably of greater
interest.
