In a way, the cover by graphics expert Judit Banko sums up all of it. In the foreground: a Boeing-747, a short-barelled revolver, and a sunny terrace restaurant on a tropic isle. In the background: the Blue, White and Red of the French tricolor.

Danny Skagen, one a mercenary in tropical republics and now an agent for other European mercenaries, is hired by French state prosecutor Pierre Gerradi to capture the war criminal Georges Clever, one-time second-level officer and torturer of the Secret Army Organization during the 1959 rebelling in Algeria, and bring him back to Paris. A long time ago Clever fled to the tropical island of Barrengos, and has made an important and lucrative place for himself in the criminal word there. Skagen, with a few chosen thugs, and also with the somewhat mysterious Simon, Gerradi's agent, travels to this Caribbean island, seeks out Clever, and violently brings him back to France. But betrayal and death may be waiting there...

The novel is fast, very cleverly paces. The language, too, is simple and easily understandable, generally stained only by the usual HEA typos. We become well-acquainted with Skagen's character, because he himself (except in a few special cases) tells the story in the first person. This is good because a sequel has been promised (which is demanded by the end-free ending of the current work: several pages have already tickled our interest in Hungarian Life).

Kritikindaĵoj:

Items deserving criticism:

1) The other characters, except perhaps for Alex and Simon, remain vague and poorly worked out, I think. Similarly for the character of Georges Clever, who has almost no role except for that of target.

2) Skagen kapablas tre rapide ŝanĝi siajn planojn. Tiu kapablo absolute necesas pro tio, ke preskaŭ ĉiam liaj originalaj planoj paneas. La klimaksa hekatomba fiasko okazas pro la fakto, ke li esence saltis en lagon da fekaĵoj, supozante, ke temas pri pura akvo. Nome: temas pri la heroo kiel nekompetenta fuŝulo.

2) Skagen is capable of quickly changing his plans. This capability is absolutely necessary because his original plans almost always break down. The climactic holocaust fiasco takes place because he has basically jumped into a lake of shit because he supposes that it's clean water. Namely: here we're talking of the hero as incompetent screw-up.

Namely, the book cannot be favorably compared with such works by Nemere as the thought-provoking The Blind Bird, On a Granite Field, and High Water, or the suspenseful Fever. But it is a legitimate part of the unfortunately too short list of quickly readable and easily enjoyable non-thought-provoking recreational novels in Esperanto.
