Esperanto uses twelve non-English characters, i.e. six small and six capital letters with
supersigns. These are not included in the Latin-1 implementation of non-ASCII (i.e. high bit
set) characters. Several different methods have been adopted to compensate for this. One is
the use of a special letter or symbol to indicate a preceding or following supersign. Another
is the use of the Latin-3 standard in many documents (ISO-8859-3). For the latter, Latin-3
fonts are necessary to read these documents correctly. Several sources of such fonts follow.
The gradual introduction of Unicode, hopefully, will resolve all such problems; Esperanto
letters, like the letters and symbols that make up most other languages, have a place in
this new standard. Java fans please note: JDK 1.1 includes support for mapping
between Unicode and a number of different current standards, including ISO-8859-3, as
part of Sun's internationalization policy.
