Mi ricevis Vian leteron de 25. I. Vi scias, kredeble, ke antaŭ nelonge (sub
la konstanta premado de kelkaj reformistoj) mi havis la intencon proponi al
la Lingva Komitato projekton de kelkaj plibonigoj per vojo de
"neologismoj". Sed baldaŭ mi konvinkiĝis, ke, kion ajn ni farus, ni neniam
kontentigus la reformistojn kaj ĉia parolado eĉ pri la plej senkulpaj
plibonigoj estus nun tre danĝera; tial mi forĵetis mian intencon. Ĝis la
tempo, kiam ni estos tute fortaj kaj havos la sankcion de la registaroj,
ni devas severe eviti ĉian paroladon pri plibonigoj. Se ni mem tenos
nin forte, tiam neniaj atakoj de kritikistoj prezentos por ni ian danĝeron.
Se niaj malamikoj diras, ke pro la supersignoj ni ne povas presi en ĉiu
presejo, tio ĉi estas ja malvero, ĉar dank'al la "h" ni povas presi en
ĉiu presejo.

I received your letter of Jan. 25. You know, of course, that not long ago
(under the constant pressure of a few reformists) I had the intention of
offering the Language Committee a project of a few improvements via the way
of "neologisms". But I soon became convinced that, whatever we might do, we
would never satisfy the reformists and all talk of even the most innocent
improvements would now be very dangerous; so I discarded my intention.
Until the time when we are quite strong and have governmental sanction,
we must strictly avoid all talk of improvements. If we ourselves keep
strong, then no attacks of critics will present any danger to us. If our
enemies say that, because of the supersigns, we can't print in every
printing house, this is already a falsehood, because thanks to the "h" we
can print in every printing house.

Se la esploradon de nia afero prenus sur sin ia institucio tre aŭtoritata
(ekzemple ia registaro aŭ la Asocio de Akademioj), tiam ni povus aliĝi al
ĝi tute oficiale kaj promesi, ke ni ĉion akceptos; sed se la Delegacio
kreos nur privatan komitaton, kiu ne havos sufiĉe da aŭtoritateco en la
okuloj de la mondo, ni devas esti tre singardaj; ĉar la forto, kiun donos
al ni nia konstanteco kaj persisteco, estas multege pli granda ol tiu
tre duba forto, kiun povas doni al ni la Delegacio. Tial mi opinias, ke ĉiu
esperantisto faros tre bone, se li helpos la Delegacion, sed li devas tion
ĉi fari private, ne en la nomo de la esperantistoj kaj ne ligante sin
blinde antaŭe per ia promeso.

If the study of our affair were to be taken on by some very
authoritative institution (for example a government or the Association of
Academies), then we might officially join it and promise that we will
accept everything; but if the Delegation only creates a private committee
which does not have enough authority in the world's eyes, we must be very
careful; because the strength that is given to us by our constancy and
persistence is far greater than that very dubious strength that the
Delegation can give us. So I believe that every Esperantist will do very
well if he helps the Delegation, but he must do this privately, not in
the name of the Esperantists and not blindly linking himself in advance
with some promise

Fari reformojn (sub la preteksto, ke tion ĉi decidis la komitato de la
Delegacio) ni povos nur tiam, se la komitato de la Delegacio havos tre
grandan aŭtoritatecon en la okuloj de la mondo (kion mi tre dubas); en
alia okazo ni devos eviti ĉian paroladon pri reformoj, kaj la Delegacio (se
ĝi ne volas alporti malutilon al nia ideo) devos simple diri, ke ĝi post
esplorado akceptis Esperanton kaj ke la demandon pri ŝanĝoj ĝi lasas al la
decido de la Lingva Komitato de la esperantistoj.

We can only make reforms (under the pretext that this was decided on by
the committee of the Delegation) if the committee of the Delegation has
very great authority in the eyes of the world (which I very much doubt);
in any other case we must avoid all talk of reforms, and the Delegation (if
it does not want to bring harm to our idea) will simply have to say that
after study it has accepted Esperanto and that it is leaving the question
of changes for decision by the Esperantist Language Committee
